January 20, 2012 – Toronto: BoConcept is excited to introduce their inspiring collaboration with world-renowned artist and designer Karim Rashid to launch a new line of functional stylish furniture and accessories named in honour of the designer’s early years studying in the Canadian capital – The Ottawa Collection.  These two renowned international design “brands” are making cutting–edge urban design accessible and affordable as the Ottawa Collection is unveiled on March 1, 2012 in BoConcept stores in Canada and around the world.

With offices in New York City and Amsterdam, Holland, Rashid is considered one of the most prolific designers of his generation with over 3,000 designs in production, 300 awards and work in 35 countries. His work is featured in 200 permanent collections and galleries worldwide.

The Ottawa Collection
The Ottawa Collection includes a complete dining room set with table, chairs, sideboard and cabinet.  A light-hearted line of accessories complements the set, creating an entire environment for urbanites.

The minimalist but never ordinary style offers unique features and precise detailing that make each piece hard to resist.  The dining table features a soft slanting under-skirting and leg clusters that make it welcoming.  Inspired by nature, the dining chair celebrates the welcome simplicity of the leaf that creates an elegant cross-table profile when pushed in, and like the table, sits on a forest of legs, perfect for tucking in your feet.  The sideboard has sensual and intuitive handles that are really functional eye candy. Colorful inserts can be used to customize the handles and ends of the sideboard piece.

The cabinet has large graphic easy-to-use handles that add a whimsical element and come in two colors, oak or green. Together, the pieces create an urban environment that is smart and savvy.

“BoConcept and Karim Rashid share the same passion for beautiful design with a high level of functionality. The Ottawa collection has a strong unique expression and it fulfills all the wishes and demands we have in our design DNA to ensure customer satisfaction. The cooperation with Karim has been fantastic and we believe the result will catch the attention of design lovers globally.” Viggo Molholm, CEO BoConcept.

Accessories that complete the line include a bold black and white fingerprint rug created to speak about the “new global uniqueness where we are all empowered to express our individuality”, suggests Rashid. A cheerful color palette of puzzle shaped vases, a futuristic bright orange pendant lamp, a coordinating glass touch lamp with the same bright orange cord, a hand-made aluminum bowl designed to form a pattern, and a set of originally designed cups, espresso cups and rimmed saucers that celebrate Rashid’s art.

Rashid began drawing as a child when his father, an artist himself, would take him to sketch churches in London at the age of five. Shortly afterwards, the family moved to Canada where the young Karim attended EXPO 67 which inspired him to build physical worlds. “That’s why I started to get interested in this idea of – first of all invention, second of all technology and third of all shaping our physical world”, Rashid explains. “With the Ottawa Collection,” he continues, “I have taken a journey back to my roots 30 years ago, when I graduated from design school in Ottawa, Canada. It’s a small northern city with a beautiful climate and when I’m in Denmark, I always have the same feeling. So when I started working with Danish-based BoConcept, I thought it would be nice to pay homage to my 30 years in design.”
